Now for part two of our musings on 2026. This time we took a look at data in logistics and came up with seven new trends / growth areas, some of which have been brewing for a while but for which we think their time to shine is now.

Take a look and let us know what you think.

1. Data Integration

Siloed data hampers good decision making. We expect to see more initiatives that centralise data across carriers, warehouses and other stakeholders, resulting in better communication and information sharing, faster response times and more coordinated activity.

2. Cyber Security

As logistics becomes more digital we're witnessing a corresponding rise in cyber security incidents. Data analytics is helping to increase security via predictive threat detection, anomaly analysis an event correlation.

3. Artificial Intelligence

AI, one of the most talked about topics, had to be in the list. It will make its presence felt in planning, demand forecasting and faster response times to supply chain disruptions. Agentic AI will also find use cases in real time adjustments to dispatching, pricing and routing.

4. End-to-End Visibility

Real-time data from IoT sensors, telematics and other connected devices will become much more mainstream. Expect to see more control towers and integrated data platforms that provide live tracking of shipments, conditions and exceptions.

5. Digital Twins

Digital twin models enable 'what if' planning, allowing users to simulate decisions prior to implementation. The models help with reducing downtime, route optimisation and inventory planning.

6. Sustainability Analytics

As regulatory pressure grows there will be more tracking and analysis of carbon emissions to ensure compliance – and meet operational targets.

7. Last-Mile Data Optimisation & Urban Logistics

Detailed data on delivery patterns, urban congestion and customer behaviour will drive last-mile productivity via micro-hubs, dynamic routing and analytics-based ETA systems.

Who knows how much of this will become reality. Perhaps baby steps in some areas and full on implementation in others. One thing we're sure of - it will be a busy year for data and logistics.
