The data visualisation of music

The data visualisation of music

Ever heard of musical data visualisation?

No? Neither had we until recently when one of our team stumbled across ‘Off The Staff’ a YouTube channel created by Nicholas Rougeux. It’s an experiment in visualising the notes from music scores and a wonderful blend of sight and sound.

At The Information Factory we spend our working days up to our neck (and beyond) in data and data visualisation. And when we talk of data visualisation, we're normally referring to the tables, charts, graphs, grids etc which help to derive the insights our logistics clients need to drive their business.

Off the Staff has shown us data visualisation from a different perspective.

In Nicholas Rougeux’ experiment various pieces of classical music are visualised. Dots represent a note in the score. Pitch is indicated by the distance from the centre of the image, while the time at which the note occurs is given by the angle from the 12 o'clock position. Dot sizes indicate note duration.

To see / hear what we mean – click here. It’s Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel.

Enjoy!
