People of The Information Factory #14 – Rene Kana

Introducing Rene Kana, winter skier, summer cyclist, and database specialist.

"At university I studied Mathematics with an IT option for IT – an emerging field at the time, and I was curious about the opportunities it created. It was just after the Commodore was released, when computers were cumbersome. But with a dose of creativity and excitement, we created a variety of software.

I worked with a solid group of friends on many IT projects. I was in charge of the database side of the operations. We started with simple Oracle databases but I enjoyed playing with them to find elegant solutions.

After graduating I worked for DHL as a Teradata expert where I met Martin Borsc and Rene Slovacek. A lot of my life decisions have been guided by friends, and I joined The Information Factory thanks to Martin's recommendation. I think it was the right call.

I'm pleased to continue working with friends as a Teradata developer on DHL projects. Even after 30 years I still enjoy the magical moment when I find the key to a difficult puzzle or optimise a piece of code for a customer.

Currently, I'm working on a project that enables customers to monitor cost allocations for their logistics operations. This puzzle is a complex combination of modules aligning new technologies and is also a great database challenge.

To unwind outside of work, I ski during winter whenever the weather allows. I'm lucky to live just one hour away from some good skiing spots in North Moravia. It's not the Alps, but it's a good family friendly escape. During spring and summer, I take out my bike to enjoy the Czech countryside and explore local breweries which makes for some interesting rides. It's also inspiring me to craft my own beer one day."
